CPU heatsink & fan upgraded required?
Hello:
Newbie here. Just upgraded our Dell 8200 Dimension from a 1.7Ghz with a 2.8Ghz chip from Tigerdirect mentioned in another thread.
I also purchased a CPU cooler fan upgrade. The chip works great, but the fixture holding the "old" heatsink does not accept the new P4 CPU cooler (fan with Heatsink). I'm running the system with the old heatsink and fan shroud assembly.
1.) Do I run any risk of burning up the new, faster chip with the old cooling system?
2.) Can I replace the plastic fixture holding the heatsink, to accept the new CPU cooler?
3.) Do I need to purchase a different CPU cooler to fit the exisiting plastic fixture?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Peter

Peter,
If you were able to find any answers about the plastic bracket please share. I just put a new 3.0 Northwood in my PE 700 and I am not able to use the new heatsink/fan. I rally do not want to buy another heatsink.
just reply and it should email to let me know.

Everything worked out great. Thanks for all the replies and help. Special Thanks to SpongeBob's great upgrade site & tips!
Here is what we did:
Upgraded 3x Dimension 8200 to 2.8Ghz P4 with new Heatsink (Part# 1Y339 – Copper Heatsink for up to 3.06Ghz CPU)
Upgraded 1x Dimension 8100 to 2.8GHz with Powerleap PL-P4/N Upgrade Kit - socket 423 to Socket 478 converter
To answer XSmojo question. We did not replace the plastic brackets. We used the upgraded copper heatsinks from Dell on the Dimension 8200 and the supplied new heatsink and fan assembly that came with the Powerleap kit on the Dimension 8100. Assembly and install was a snap. Sorry, but I can't help you with the brackets. The new Dell heatsink should be adequate for your 3.0 Northwood. The heatsink is only $20. Not sure if you have the same heatsink in your PE700.
Good luck!

Hey:
Which Dimension are you asking about? I did one 8100 and five 8200. None of them ever had their BIOS upgraded. I believe the version on the 8200 is A02. I'll check and confirm later.
What are the exact spec's on the CPU you purchased? I initially ordered one that didn't work either. You must buy one with a 400MHZ FSB. Anything higher won't work.
Good luck,

Thanks for that MMM2003, I've just ordered from Dell (along with a new fan, this old one is getting noisy). They questioned the PC / heatsink compatability a few times but eventually caved and said 'yep' several people have orded the sink for the exact upgrade I've done.
I'll feel a littel better now I don't have to worry about 'CPU melt down' !!
Thanks again for the help
